Rectangles

8” Wide  -    20” Long
All  shades of Blue, White, Grey, Black, Turquoise, Sand or Brown.


Knitted Fish

Make 2 pieces the same.
Knitting needles – 1 pair 3¼mm (UK10mm  -  USA3)
Using A (main colour)  cast on 13 sts.
Ist Row (Right Side).  -  Knit
2nd Row.  -  P1, *k1, p1; rep from * to end.
These 2 rows form the pattern. Keeping pattern correct dec 1 st at each end of next and following 2 alt rows. 7 sts remain. Work 1 row.
Keeping pattern correct and working in stripes of 2 rows in B (contrast colour) and 2 rows in A, inc 1 st at each end of next and every alt row until there are 17 sts.
Work 5 rows straight, thus ending with 2 rows in B.
Keeping stripes correct dec1 st at each end of next and following alt row. 13 sts remain.
Work 1 row. Break off B and using A only continue to dec 1 st at each end of next and every alt row until 5 sts remain. Cast off.

To make up.
Using Black embroider eye on each piece..Sew 2 pieces together leaving a small opening. Stuff firmly and close opening.
The fish can be plain as well as stiped, sizes altered by using larger needles and thicker yarn.


Crochet Fish

Ideal for using up scraps of yarn to make brightly coloured fish, or random-dyed yarn

Materials:
Use double knitting yarn and 3.5 or 4mm hook (9 or 8), or any yarn and appropriate size of hook [fish will be smaller (4ply) or larger (aran)]
Polyester or cotton wadding, or cut up tights or T-shirts for stuffing to give shape
Black/dark thread or yarn for embroidered eyes
Pattern is worked in double crochet (dc) into the back loop of chain edge unless otherwise stated (this gives scale effect on body of fish)
Start at the mouth end:
Make a loop and work 6 chain
Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to make ring, 2ch
6 dc into the ring and join with sl st (6ch loops)

Mouth/head

Round 1 2ch, *1 dc into back of each of next 2 ch, 2dc into next ch *, rep * to *, I dc, sl st into top of 2ch to join, (10ch loops) 2ch
2 1dc, *2dc into next ch loop, 1dc* rep *to* 4 times (14 ch loops) join with sl st as before, 2ch

1dc into both loops of each stitch, join with sl st as before, 2ch (14)[this defines the end of the mouth area and body may then be worked in a different colour if desired]

 

  Increase for body
4 *3dc, 2dc into next dc* 3 times, 2dc,1dc into base of starting ch, join with sl st as before, 2ch (18)
5 1dc into each dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch (18)
6 *2dc, 2dc into next dc, 3dc, 2dc into next dc*, rep * to *, 2dc, 2dc into next dc join with sl st as before, 2ch (23)
7 1dc into each dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch (23)
8 *2dc, 2dc into next dc, 3dc, 2dc into next dc*, rep * to * twice, 2 dc join with sl st as before, 2ch (29)
9,10,11,12

Work 4 rounds, 1dc into each dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch (29) (More rounds may be worked to produce a fish with a longer body, if required)

  Decrease to tail
12 * 4dc, miss 1 ch*, repeat * to * 5 times, 3dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch (23)

Work 1 round of 23dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch

14 *3dc, miss 1ch*, repeat * to *  to last 3 dc, 3dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch (18)

Work 1 round of 18 dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch Stuff with wadding to a nice shape and firmness, allowing a little extra for remainder of tail section

16 (3dc, miss 1 ch) 4 times, 2dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch (14)
17 Work 1 round of 14 dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch
18 1dc, miss I ch, 2dc, (miss Ich, 2dc) to end, join with sl st as before, 2ch (8)

Work 1 round of 8 dc, join with sl st as before, 2ch

  Tail section

Fold in half with ‘seamline’ to the right Work 1dc taking the inside loop from a dc on each side, repeat to work a total of 4dc, turn

21 3ch, 2tr into each dc from previous row (9bars) turn
22 4ch, I dtr, 1 tr, 1 htr, 2 dc, 1 htr, 1 tr, 1 dtr.
  Finish off and weave in end

Fin
Work fins on top and side of body as follows
Connect wool and work in a line into ‘scale’ loops of body, 4ch, Idr, Itr, Ihtr, Idc, sl st and finish off, weaving in ends.

Eyes
Work eyes at end of mouth area on sides of head

Other ideas
Attach other decoration, e.g. sequins if desired
Use for bag or mobile phone decoration by adding a loop or ring for attaching
Include weight, or pebble  with stuffing and use for hanging, e.g. for a mobile, or for weighting down corners of a tablecloth


Crochet Coral

Foundation ring; using double knitting wool and a 4.00mm crochet hook make 5ch.ss into last chain to form a ring.
Round 1; 3 ch (counts as first tr) 14 trs into ring.
Round 2; 3ch (counts as first tr)  2 trs into next st, (3tr into next stitch to end)ss into top of 3rd chain.
Round 3; as round 2 fasten off.
To make a larger size repeat round 2 as many times as required.
These patterns are just a guide to get you started, feel free to make whatever you like – Starfish, Jellyfish, Seaweed, Crabs, Shells etc.

Head

Increase 1st each end of next 4 Rows (13)
Work 3 Rows
Next Row Decrease 1st each end & every Row until 3 remain. Cast off.

Make Up

Stitch front & Back sections together leaving end of tail open. Turn out & stuff.
Finally sew up end of tail, embroider eyes & sew on hair

Using 2 double ended Needles cast on 6 Stitches, Knit
Keeping this needle in the same direction knit (do not turn as for normal knitting)
Knit till work measures 20cm.
Break off yarn.
Thread end through all stitches, pull up and stitch into Whelk shape
