Crochet Therapy (June 08)

Inga Hamilton, one of our Knitting Artists has set up a project in her local hospital:

"I've been putting crochet packs into a Belfast hospital close to my heart. The visitors to a clinic can take a pack containing everything they need to make a coral. They can then keep it, or send it to me to make into a reef for the wall. The project has taken off much better than my first hopes and now is spreading into further clinics."

Inga is desperately short of crochet hooks

Arts Council Survey

From Friday 1 February 2008, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s first ever national survey of amateur arts groups in England goes live. VAN urges all voluntary arts and crafts groups in England to take part in the survey. The survey will help focus attention on the wealth of amateur and voluntary arts opportunities enjoyed by millions of people across the country every day - often with little publicity. The research has the potential to be very useful for arts groups, who will be able to refer to the findings when applying for funding, and for policy-makers, who can use it to look at how amateur arts groups could be better supported. The results will be published in the summer.

Knitting Research

Elizabeth Muir has written with the following request:

"I am researching the past to try to better understand the social and economic impacts of hand knitting. Why did it develop in some cultures and not others? What have been the drivers to establish and maintain hand knitting in a community. How does the take-up of hand knitting vary across class, gender, age and other variables? How has the law, religion or cultural traditions impacted upon people's hand knitting? Any help with references, information and comments would be most welcome."

Knitting For Quitting

Sharon Thomas is looking into the benefits of knitting as an aid to giving up smoking. If you have found that knitting has helped you to give up or know of any anecdotal evidence, please get in touch.

Click here to let us know

Therapy

A large volume of anecdotal evidence is needed to prove the therapeutic benefits of knitting, crochet and cross stitching. There is now the opportunity to present this to a group of doctors and researchers and for everyone to gain from the findings. Normally anecdotal evidence is not taken into account, but if enough is collected (thousands of stories) and documented properly, it will be difficult to ignore.

To make the most of this unique opportunity, we need the help of as many knitters and stitchers as possible
