Knitted Textile Student Awards 2010

Open To All Undergraduates And Those Graduating In 2010

"Celebrating and rewarding student practitioners of hand/machine knitting and crochet."

Those entering have the opportunity to win the following prizes

1st prize £1,000 for overall best in both design and originality,

3 further prizes of £350 each

This prestigious award is aimed at exploring the art and craft of contemporary knitting (hand or machine knitted) and crochet. Dynamic, innovative design - dramatic fashion – idiosyncratic furnishings – intriguing artworks. (There is no need to determine the categories as there are often pieces that could fall in more than one category.)

Work will be judged on originality, overall concept and the innovative use of technique, yarns, materials and colour. You can enter existing coursework where applicable.

The competition is open with immediate effect and photographs of your entered piece(s) should be sent in along with your contact details on reverse side of each photograph to the address below. Closing date for photographs is 1st August 2010. If selected, you will be notified via email during mid-August. Please ensure we have your correct contact details for that period.

15 entries will be selected for the finalist’s exhibition which will be staged at the Knitting and Stitching Shows Autumn 2010;
Alexandra Palace, 7-10 October. Harrogate, 25-28 November.

All selected finalists (or someone suitable nominated by them) will be expected to set up their allocated display area at both venues and to be in attendance for the duration of each exhibition. The finalist’s work will need to be taken in person to the set up of the Alexandra Palace show on 6 October (tbc) and it will be your responsibility to mount your own display. Between the shows your work and display materials can be kept in storage and transported to the Harrogate show ready for setting up on 24 November (tbc). (this is optional and at no cost to you). Your work is entirely yours again at the end of the last exhibition day, 28 Nov.

The judging panel will include leading textile industry professionals, designers, authors and sponsors of the awards.

Prior to the shows, finalists will have the opportunity to seek advice from our professional curator to discuss display layouts and ensure presentation is to a high standard. Some display materials are available for your use if required. As well as providing an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your finalist piece(s), you are also encouraged to present your portfolio and sell small items of work. You will therefore gain first hand experience in planning, setting up and manning an exhibition including various aspects of promotion and marketing.
