Teaching Children

National Knitting Week 2006 will soon be upon us and the great thing is, each and every one of you is invited to take part. Last year hundreds of events were organised across the country from Land's Ends to John O'Groats in an effort to get the nation knitting again. Hand Knitting was brought to the forefront of attention and in addition a large amout of money was raised for many different charities.

This year we hope that National Knitting Week will be even bigger and better. The dedicated website run by 'Knitting' magazine is where all events are listed, but if you feel that you need to give more details and/or a link to a website, please get in touch and let us know. Remember, we want this to be the knitting event of the year and we need your help!

Vicky from Dalkeith, Midlothian is busy encouraging locals to knit for orphans in Belarus. During National Knitting Week, 14 - 21 October, there will be a collection box outside her wool shop. "Nezabudka (which means 'Forget Me Not') is an orphanage in Belarus and through Candle International we're planning a big charity knit (or crochet) for the orphanage and the hospital baby unit (clothing, blankets or toys) It's a great way to get rid of all those 'bits' of wool.

Saturday 14 October: Knit a River

Jubilee Gardens, Southbank, London

Gerald Allt, the organiser, with the river

To celebrate the start of National Knitting week I Knit London and WaterAid are assembling the river on Jubilee Gardens, Southbank, London at 11am for a photo call. This is an opportunity for contributors and anyone else to be part of the campaign by getting involved and meeting the organizers.

We believe that the campaign has taken the message of WaterAid far and wide and we are so grateful, and very proud! The campaign is also helping to promote knitting and we see the two things very much working together. The photo call will last for approximately 2 hours from then on we can all stay around for a knitting session.
