Finished Cakes

First you need to make a fairly long plait, in a cakey colour, use 9 strands of wool, each about 2.5 metres
Using the plait, stitch it into a coil, this will form the base of the cake, around 5cm diameter will be fine (1)
Cut out a disc of card to fit over the coil, the thicker the card, the better, but not corrugated, this will make the base sturdier
Using the rest of the plait, stitch it around but start to shape it upwards to form the sides of the cake, constantly shaping as you stitch it to achieve the perfect shaped cake, stitch the loose end in place and cut off excess plait (2)
To finish off the cake you need to make another coil, for the top, make this last once you have finished the sides, and keep checking the coil as you stitch it, to ensure you get the right size for your cake top (3)
Once you have finished the top, you need to make the icing.  For white icing, for the ‘sprinkle’ cake and ‘cheery on top’ cake, use a brilliant white wool.  Using as small a crochet hook as you can, crochet a circle of icing.  If you want to make a butterfly cake, use a chunky cream coloured wool, plait it and make another coil.  Stitch the icing to the cake top as neatly as you can.
For sprinkles, get some brightly coloured embroidery threads, in about 6 colours, and decorate, using French knots, use your own judgement as to what you think looks right
For the cherry on top, you can make the cherry in a number of ways.  Either a bought pompom, a home made pompom, or a hand made felt ball, either way, stitch the cherry in the centre, making sure it is securely attached
For the butterfly cake you need to do 2 small pieces (approx 2-3cm) of French Knitting, in the same colour as your cake.  Stitch the French knitting in place, again using your own judgement
Partially sew the decorated top of your cake to the base of your cake, doing it this way hides any loose ends.  Stuff your cake using rags of fabric, it needs to be stuffed pretty solid, but don’t over stuff it, or the cake could lose its shape.  Finish off sewing the cake top on, making sure you hide loose ends as you go.
