The Children's Society Need Your Help! (21.11.07)

Helen Dickson, Events Coordinator:
" We have received over 7,000 knitted squares from our supporters, and we really need help to sew them together. The stocking will measure 21 metres from top to heel and 10 metres from heel to toe. That's one and a half double decker buses! It will then be half filled with presents, which will be distributed amongst the Children's Society children in our projects, in time for Christmas.
We are holding sewing workshops at our head office location in Margery Street, Islington, London on 27,29,30 November and December 1,7,10,11,12,13,14 from 9.30am until 7.15pm. Please come along for as long as you can spare, even if it's only for 1/2 an hour, and bring your own darning needle and some red wool, if possible."

100 Years Of Knitting In Swanage: Knitters Invited To Reproduce Vintage Pattern In Modern Yarns (13.08.07)

As It Was...
As It Is Now...

This year the Wool & Craft Shop in Swanage, Dorset is celebrating its centenary - 100 years of supplying yarn and crafts to Purbeck and surrounding areas. Built in 1907, the shop, originally named 'The Dorset Knitting Company' was started and run by the Clealls, a local family, for 44 years until it was purchased by Mr Bishop, a cousin of Mrs Cleall. Although the Bishop family only ran the shop for 4 years, it is still owned by Mrs Curtis, the daughter of Mr Bishop. It is the only shop in Swanage that remains true to the purpose for which it was built and still retains it's original frontage.

As part of their centenary celebrations, the proprietors are running a National Competition for knitters to reproduce a vintage knitting pattern in modern yarns. Entrants will be encouraged to find any pattern that is dated pre 1970 and match an appropriate yarn to bring the item back to life in 2007. Closing date is 10th December 2007

The Knitted Walking Stick Cosy Competition: Closing date 7th September 2007 (09.08.07)

"Inspired by the dignifying powers of health-related knitting projects everywhere, The Missability Radio Show is organising a walking stick cosy knitting competition. With your great ideas, knitting skills and visionary powers, we can create a richly diverse collection of variations on the standard appearance of an ordinary grey walking stick."

This is a competition thought up by Felicity Ford, founder of The Missability Radio Show and invites us all to rethink our concept of how walking sticks should look. Why can't they be a fashion item, brightly coloured, objects of conversation...? If you are new to knitting, this is an ideal project for you. If you're an accomplished knitter, then extend your designing talents. If you feel for the environment, use recycled yarn; the important thing is to join in!

'Spin A Yarn' In Bovey Tracey Devon Celebrates First Year (10.07.07)

Group knitting at one of the many workshops
Knitting Jewellery workshop

Joyce Mason, of 'Spin A Yarn' has written to tell us about her exciting first year:

"I can’t believe it is 1 year since Spin A Yarn opened on 4 July 2006. It’s been such an exciting, enjoyable and busy year. I’ve made many wonderful friends and am proud that stocking a wide variety of exciting new yarns from all around the world has inspired new knitters and encouraged lapsed knitters to take up their needles again.
During the year with the help of all my talented teachers, we have run a variety of workshops from knitting & crochet to felting and spinning. West Country author & designer, Claire Crompton has run many successful workshops at Spin A Yarn, from “Professional Finishing techniques” to “Knitwear Design”, “Knitted Flowers & Jewellery”, “Knitted Bags” and “Recycling & Remodelling”. Monthly knit and chat sessions are popular and we hold regular knitting surgery sessions. I try to stock local yarn as well as yarn from far flung countries. We are lucky to have a growing number of talented local spinners and dyers in the West Country. In fact, Devon is hosting its first ever Fibrefest this year at the Mountbatten Estate near Cold Harbour Mill at Uffcumbe on 1st & 2nd September."

World's First Knitted Petition: Knit A River For WaterAid (01.06.07)

Part Of The Knitted River
The River Travels Over London Bridge
The River On It's Way To Downing Street

The first major event took place in London on May 12th 2007 when WaterAid, I Knit London and 250 supporters carried some of the river through London to Downing Street and the UK parliament. Afterwards, a section of the knitted river was presented to Tony Blair's government, ahead of this years G8 summit in Germany, as a symbol of the thousands of people who support the call to End Water Poverty. The aim of the project is to raise awareness for WaterAid. The growing interest in knitting and it's use as more than just for a pair of socks or a scarf is evident from the growing numbers of projects, loosely termed 'knittivism', which has seen this traditional pastime take on a much more political and forthright agenda. The river will be used at a number of events and festivals throughout 2007, including the Glastonbury Festival and at the National Theatre.

Durational Knitting Sprints To Be Held On Hackney Marshes, East London, Saturday 26th May (25.05.07)

Knitting Sprints are part of an Artist's Sport's Day organised to raise awareness of the change in Arts Council Funding and how it will affect all artists.
Participants will each have 5m of wool to knit into a scarf as they make their way round the 400m track. On completion of their circuit, a fashion show then ensues on the 100m track, which will be judged by umpires drawn from the people on the marshes on the day. Marks will be given for amount of wool knitted, quality and complicatedness of stitches used and extravagance and flair in the modelling of the scarf. Please bring your own wool.
There'll be a medal for the winner!

Knit A River: Help To Make The River Flow and Join A Sewing Up Day (10.04.07)

Over 60,000 squares have been rereived since last June and we’re currently very busy piecing all the squares together but we need help so if you live in London or know someone that does please join us at one of the following weekend events at our offices in Vauxhall: Saturdays 14th, 21st, 28th to help sew the river together.

WaterAid are currently lobbying the G8 to put water and sanitation on this year’s agenda. So we’ve decided to take the ‘river’ or ‘knitition’ to Downing Street on 12 May. The assembly point will be Spring Gardens near Vauxhall station. From there we will march a short distance with the river to Whitehall and Downing Street.
