World's Largest Sock (08.05.09)

Shop sign in America
The original cast on
Helpers knitting the giant sock

Bigsock started in October 2006, when Joanna Ratcliffe decided to hold a charity knitting event for National Knitting Week in the UK. The original idea was just a giant circular knit, but just days before the event the idea of creating a giant record breaking sock was born. It is 1500 stitches on 10 circular needles, the largest part of this has just arrived back with Joanna in the UK, as it was getting too heavy to post, a new piece has just arrived in Tennessee! Joanna has plans for a group in Germany to start another new piece from the toe up, so Europe can work on the foot while America carry on with the leg!

Take Part In The Second 'Knit Me' At The Royal Festival Hall Saturday 18th April (14.04.09)

Knit Me Number 1 In Progress
Knitting In Trafalgar Square
The Finished Piece

Kat writes: "This is the second knit me, the first was in Trafalgar Square. At Trafalgar Square, we had a wonderful varied mix of knitters that saw people of all different walks of life whether it was in age, where they lived or the language they spoke - all come together to knit.

I am inviting all knitters to another public collaborative knitting event at the Royal Festival Hall on Saturday the 18th of April. We will be there from 1pm til 5pm by the glass lifts on the first floor facing the river. We will be knitting one big piece of knitting. There are no rules to how you have to knit, you might not even knit, you might want to crochet. The knitting as an act of public design allows people the opportunity to meet people, to share skills and experineces that would otherwise be difficult to have in the space.

'Knit Me': Trafalgar Square, Saturday 14th March 2009 (06.03.09)

Kat Hall is at Goldsmith's College in London and as part of her final year project she has organised a 'Knit Me'. She writes:

"My interest lies in when people get excited and full of ideas by taking part in a creative activity. I am using knitting as this happens so naturally in knitting. I am designing events and objects that try to create this experience and in creating this experience some of the possibilities of knitting can be realised. This event as an event aims to capture peoples imaginations to what knitting can be and all the possibilities of that they could do with knitting as a collaborative act."

A team of knitters will be there throughout the day, 9.00am-4.00pm to help people and will be easily recognisable. The piece that we aim to knit will start from one long strip and then will divide into strips when people come and strips will also divide to include more people into the work. Knitters need to bring along yarn and needles, and are free to use whatever patterns, stitches, ideas they have on their strip!
