Bristol: Yarn Bomb hits Aspects and Milestones Headquarters (01.07.10)

Employees and clients of Bristol-based charity, Aspects and Milestones Trust, turned up at work on 29 June to find their offices had been hit by a yarn bomb. Staff turned up in the morning to find the pillars by the entrance wrapped in knitting, and some of the brickwork covered in knitted bricks. Knitted butterflies festooned the bushes, and little clumps of knitted flowers and toadstools had sprung up in the greenery. Many of the service users and staff across the Trust like to knit. Inspired by the work of other ‘yarn-bombers’ worldwide, they formed a covert collective, meeting and working in secret. “We wanted to make people look again at the ordinary things around them they take for granted and see them in a different way. We hope to make people smile!” said KnitTGritti, a member of the group. “Knit Graffiti enables us all to participate on an equal basis; everyone has a part to play, big or small, and it allows what can be a solitary medium to become a very public one.” Another member, Eddie Longstocking, added, “The combination of knitting and graffiti is a brilliant contradiction. The soft, tactile medium of textiles combined with hard, edgy street art is a really exciting idea to be working with”.

The Knitiffi group hints that they have more plans up their woolly sleeves, particularly for the Trust’s major arts event, Expressions 2010, which will be held at the Paintworks Exhibition Space from 5-9th October.

Leeds Goes Knitting Crazy on Worldwide Knit in Public Day (16.06.10)

It's been a long while since sheep have been sheared in Leeds City Centre, but that was just one of the attractions at the the city's first ever Big Knit, to celebrate Worldwide Knit in Public Day. Hundreds of people came down to the newly re-developed Granary Wharf, once the centre of wool distribution round the world- to learn how to knit, crochet, spin and dye, demonstrated by artisans from around West Yorkshire.

Organised by Leeds wool shop baa ram ewe, the day had a team of volunteers decked out in luminous pink t-shirts offering to pass on their skills to young and old. Otley based hand dyer Kirsty Clarke was hand painting yarn made from Banana Fibre, Leeds based Daniela Kloppman from Felt Studio UK was spinning the freshly shorn fleece from sheep in the square in to yarn on her spinning wheel, and Keighley's Helen Jordan from Thread of Life had a giant crochet hook to share her craft in a truly unique and visible way. Centre stage were the sheep and shearer Mike who demonstrated his shearing prowess, and even let volunteers have a go too.

"It was just a truly fantastic day" said Verity Britton, who organised the event and is owner of baa ram ewe. "We wanted to give people the opportunity to come down and learn how to knit or crochet for free, and to see some of the fabulous crafts and skills still alive in this county today".

Click on image to view full size

We are pleased to announce that the Craft Club website is now live, a co-sponsored project with the Crafts Council and the UK Hand Knitting Association to pass on knitting and crochet skills in schools and clubs across the UK. Knitting and yarn crafts are the focus for the launch and will continue to develop, even when other crafts are introduced in future years. With your help we are keen to introduce knitting and crochet skills into schools and youth clubs throughout the UK. On the Crafts Club website you will find a list of the initial volunteer training seminars and we would be very grateful if you could pass this information to anyone that you think might be interested in participating in this scheme. We are working with the WI and many other volunteers who have expressed an interest about getting involved in their local community to pass on yarn craft skills.

Please sign up and contribute to the forum and the galleries with patterns or tips for knitting or running a club.
