Could you beat Hazel Tindall's Record?

Hazel Tindall from Shetland won the Speed Knitting Contest at Alexandra Palace on Saturday 9th October with 255 stitches in 3 minutes.  This beat the previous 245 stitches in 3 minutes, achieved by Wendy Moorby at the last contest held in New York in 2003.

The British Hand Knitting Confederation (BHKC) sponsored the quest to find the fastest knitters/crocheters at

Fastest Crochet Speed:

= 20 stitches in treble crochet and 3 chain turn, using 6mm hook and Aran yarn. Each treble crochet counts as 4 points.
Highest score so far is 328 points.

Lily Chin from America, retains her BHKC title following a friendly battle against the UK’s Susan Briscoe.  Lily did 82 trebles in 3 minutes, achieving a total of 328 points.

Janet Vermist writes to us from the Netherlands to tell of Miriam Tegels' success at the handwerkbeurs in Zwolle.

Here are the results of the Dutch speed knitting contest, held at Handwerken 2005 in Zwolle on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th February 2005.

Miriam Tegels  won on Sunday managing to knit an incredible 257 stitches in 3 minutes. Second was F. Bult  who achieved 183 stitches. There are plans now for the official Dutch Championship to be held in 2006 (date to be announced).

Holland's fastest knitter - hoping to pip Hazel to the post at the next challenge!

The BHKC's Global Speed Knitting/Crocheting Contest
The next contest will take place at The Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace in London 12th - 15th October 2006

See below for details of knitting and crocheting speeds. If you would like to take part, you need to be at the show during these dates. Send us a picture of you in action and let us know your knitting/crochet speeds over 3 minutes.

Further details will be posted nearer the date, in the meantime, keep practicing!

Fastest Crochet Speed = 20 stitches in treble crochet and 3 chain turn, using 6mm hook and Aran yarn. Each treble crochet counts as 4 points.  Highest score so far 92 points.

Knit several rows until you are 'comfortable' before timing your speed.
