FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS TO KNITTING

So you've mastered the basics and now feel ready to tackle an easy project. The patterns are so basic that you don't need to worry about mastering a knitting pattern.


All the projects are designed for DK (Double Knitting) yarn which is easily available from all wool shops and mail order companies in various brands and qualities.

100g Balls Double Knit

Length at centre front

Pair Nos         10 (3¼ mm) & No 8 (4mm) needles

 

Abbreviations k – Knit  p – purl   st(sts) – (stitches),
Tog-together,  Tbl- Through back of loops.

 

BACK AND FRONT(Both alike)

Using No 8 (4mm) needles cast on 121 (181.221) Sts.
And mark centre stitch with coloured thread.

Knit 4 rows
Now count in pattern as follows:
1st row: Using No 8 needle knit, wrapping yarn twice round needle.
2nd row: Knit dropping loop from previous row
3rd row: Knit until 5 sts before centre stitch,K2og, tbl K3og.tbl knit centre stitch k3tog.k2 tog, knit to end
4th row: Knit
Repeat these 4 rows until 55(55.59) sts remain ending with 4th row.

NECKBAND

Change to No.10 (3¼ mm) needles and continue as follows:

 

GIRLS AND TODDLERS VERSION

1ST ROW         (k1, p1) 12 times (k1, p2og) twice.

                         (k1, p1) 12 times k1

2nd ROW          (p1 k1) 12 times k2og, p1,k2tog

                          (k1, p1) 12 times

LADIES VERSION

1ST ROW (k1,p1) 13 times (k1, p2og) twice.

                 (k1, p1) 13 times, k1

2ND ROW (p1, k1) 13 times, k2og, p1, k2og.

                 (k1, p1) 13 times

ALL VERSIONS

Now decreasing 1st  stitch each side of centre stitch on every row work 4 more rows in ribs.   Cast off  loosely in rib.

 

FRINGE

Cut 6 (8, 10) ins length of yarn by winding yarn round strong cardboard 3(4,5)ins wide & cutting through yarns at  one edge of cardboard.

Using 4(4,6) of these lengths at a time fold in half, pull folded ends through bottom of poncho with crochet hook, thread the cut endsthrough the doubled loops and pull to form a knitted fringe.

 

TO MAKE UP

Join side seams with flat sea

 

 

 

Place Mat and Coaster

 

Materials needed
3 x (50g) balls of aran weight yarn in 3 different colours
(A, B, C)
1 pair of 5mm knitting needles

 

To make place mat


With yarn A cast on 46sts.
Start in Stripe pattern as follows:
With yarn A, knit 1 row.
With yarn B, knit 1 row.
With yarn C, knit 1 row.
These 3 rows set the stripe pattern.
Continue in stripe pattern until place mat measures 25cm or desired length.

To make coaster


With yarn A cast on 18sts.
Continue in stripe pattern as for place mat until coaster measures 10cm.

Hair band
 

Materials needed


1 x (50g) ball of double knitting weight yarn


1 pair of 4mm knitting needles


To Make


Cast on 20 sts.
Knit until hair band measures 50cm or desired length.

 



Scarf
 

Materials needed

8 x (50g) balls of aran weight yarn in 4 different colours
1 pair of 8mm knitting needles


To Make

Using 4 strands of yarn as one, cast on 16 sts.
Knit until scarf measures desired length.

 

 


 

Hat
 


Materials needed

1 x (50g) ball of aran weight yarn 1 pair of 5mm knitting needles

To make

Cast on 86 sts. Knit until hat measures 25cm or desired length.

To make up

Sew together side seams. With side seams in middle sew
