Knitted Textile Student Awards 2005

Record number of entries for this year’s Knitted Textile Student Awards.

Over 75 excellent entries were received from textile students at universities throughout the UK for the Knitted Textile Student Awards, now in it’s third year. Co-sponsored by the BHKC, Creative Exhibitions and GMC publishing’s Knitting magazine the awards have become a highlight of the Knitting and Stitching shows at Alexandra Palace and Harrogate. A team of expert professionals from the industry formed the panel of judges and they had an enormous task filtering through and honing the finalists to 35 candidates.

The curator for the Alexandra Palace gallery was Fiona Ross, Senior Lecturer at Buckinghamshire and Chilterns University and at Harrogate (23rd-26th November) it will be curated by Marion Beck, senior lecturer at Huddersfield University.

The Alexandra Palace gallery was packed with visitors on all four days of the show, and their comments were very complimentary. The Knitted Textile Student Awards has become a Knitting and Stitching Show highlight for many people.

Our team of judges included Erika Knight, Sandy Black, Debbie Bliss, Sasha Kagan, Kandy Regis, Kate Buller Jane Bolsover and Kate Taylor, all key figures in the creative craft industry. Their task was a real challenge as all the finalists work was of an extremely high standard and represented a vast variety of techniques and applications, from garments, jewellery and fashion accessories to home furnishings and even resin-coated knitting suitable for rainwear.

A team of students, whose work was exhibited, came to help man the stand and were able to discuss techniques and creative opportunities for furthering their future careers.
