JOIN OUR 'Learn To Knit'

We need volunteers who can come along to any of the shows at Exeter, Cardiff, NEC, Alexandra Palace, Harrogate, Dublin, Brighton, and Glasgow listed below and spend a couple of hours showing people how to knit. We need you to be able to explain how to cast on, (in more than one way if possible) how to increase/decrease and cast off. Anyone who volunteers needs to be competent at knitting. We know there are lots of you out there who would love to share your knowledge and enthusiasm for knitting and we need to know who you are.

In return we offer a fun packed day and an exhibitor's pass.

If you would like to help or know of anyone else who can spare a few hours, please let us know. Places are limited, so don't hesitate, contact us now.

We have been extremely grateful for all the generous help from knitting and crochet enthusiasts who have given up their time to pass on their knitting and crochet skills at previous shows up and down the country, supporting our campaign to convey the joy of yarn crafts to the next generation. However we will still need extra pairs of hands in 2009

The fabulous yarns and the sight of people knitting tempts visitors at the shows to take a break and sit and learn to knit. The sheer pleasure of handling the yarns is a real stress buster so hand knitting not only satisfies the fashion conscious but also provides a perfect therapy, bringing a sense of calm to the constant rush and pressure of life today.

There have never been so many fantastic yarns with colours and textures to suit every taste, style and pocket. Not only is the current trend for chunky knits encouraging complete newcomers to the craft, but it is also rekindling the interest of lapsed knitters. The enthusiasm extends to crochet, which is also very 'hot' again with accessories such as bags and scarves are proving really popular. There is also a keen interest in home accessories such as knitted or crocheted cushion covers and throws.

What the UK Hand Knitting Association would appreciate now is your help in the future consumer shows. We need knitters and crocheters to give a few hours of their time to pass on their skills to newcomers to the craft. You don't need to be an expert, as long as you have basic skills in knitting or crochet (not necessarily both). It is your enthusiasm that is more important than anything else.

Here is a comment from someone who learned to knit at the Liverpool Show April 2009:

"Hello,

I attended the craft day at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool on Friday last week.

While I was there I was taught to knit by a lady but I didn't get her name.  I would just like to pass my thanks on to her for her time, and also to your organisation for making this possible.  I have practised a little each day and have ordered a book to hopefully learn more.  I had never considered knitting before, but have really enjoyed the little I've done the last few days.  I'm really looking forward to my new hobby, and am grateful that you have all made this possible for me.

Thank you,

Hannah"
