16 - 23 February: Knitting Residency At The Curfew Tower, Cushendall, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
The Curfew Tower, Cushendall, County Antrim. In residence: Welsh artist, Jane Twigg and Canadian-born artist, Astrid Bin
Jane and Astrid will be inhabiting the tower for 8 days. Their present collaboration is to be an ambitious public installation that responds to what the tower means not only to the local people, but also to those who stay there and make art. They will spend a week collecting unwanted jumpers from the townspeople. Sewing these jumpers together, they will make a giant scarf that will lead, from the roof and eventually encircle the entire tower, leading around the building, down its five floors and ending in the back garden.

16 - 1 March: Knitting Residency At The Curfew Tower, Cushendall, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
The Curfew Tower, Cushendall, County Antrim. In
residence: Washington D.C. artist, Sharon Beardslee
Sharon
will inhabit the tower for 15 days. Her ambitious project
is to hand knit and felt a striking image of The Tower and its magnificence
in a one-of-a-kind Tapestry to hang on the Tower’s wall, reflecting
the significance of The Tower to the townsfolk, visiting artists
and guests. She will be offering hand spinning demonstrations
to all interested.
Sharon will be sharing The Tower with Astrid Bin and Jane Twigg for the
first week of her stay and hopes to collaborate with them on their project as
well as working on her own.

Instigated by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring in Los Angeles. The reef is a large-scale, constantly mutating series of hand-made yarn or plastic crochets that replicate the forms of natural coral. Just as all living creatures result from variations in DNA, so the species in these handicrafted reefs arise from a simple algorithm. Developing organically, it is made by an ever-expanding group of participants from around the world.

Modular knitting or mitred squares is a great patchwork technique recently seen in 'Vogue Knitting' and the books by Horst Schultz. Squares are joined together as you knit so there are no seams to sew and stunning colour effects are created using one yarn at a time. You will knit a sample using the basic square and be able to use this as the base for a bigger project.
