A contemporary update on traditional knitting, these practical knitting workshops look at ways of interpreting the patterned gloves of the Dales into modern day accessories.  Of particular interest is the use of names and dates combined with geometric two- colour patterns.  Each of the sessions will have a different focus, beginning with boas and scarves, moving onto gloves/wristbands/armlets and then leg/footwear. The workshops can be tailored to suit all levels of knitting skills just so long as you can knit and purl, cast on and off.

"For three weeks in June the Charlotte Street Gallery will be transformed into Kate’s Café, a fantasy café brimming with beautifully knitted food artworks. The Big Knit In is an annual, free, community event hosted by the University of Brighton (at the University’s Grand Parade Site) to promote knitting and crochet. There are lots of things happening throughout the day, including giant French Knitting, knit tentacles for an 'Octopus', knit on giant needles, UK Hand Knitting Association's 'Above And Below The Sea', degree exhibitions, pom pom making and much more. Silbury Arcade near Middleton Hall, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

This is a collaborative project by Knitting Artist Françoise Dupré commissioned by Milton Keynes Gallery’s Offsite Education Programme. Inspired by the highly colourful and personalised barrows scattered around the centre:mk, Dupré has created a site-specific and community-based public art work that celebrates Milton Keynes’ hidden exotic.
 
'exotic mk' was made in collaboration with three women’s groups who each made a section of the final artwork,  a barrow customized with knitting.  Between January and June 2009, the artist visited Milton Keynes Age Concern (Peartree Centre), MK Mind (York House) and The Healthy Lifestyles Project (Hedgerows Children Centre) for knitting and making sessions.

Silbury Arcade near Middleton Hall, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

This is a collaborative project by Knitting Artist Françoise Dupré commissioned by Milton Keynes Gallery’s Offsite Education Programme. Inspired by the highly colourful and personalised barrows scattered around the centre:mk, Dupré has created a site-specific and community-based public art work that celebrates Milton Keynes’ hidden exotic.
 
'exotic mk' was made in collaboration with three women’s groups who each made a section of the final artwork,  a barrow customized with knitting.  Between January and June 2009, the artist visited Milton Keynes Age Concern (Peartree Centre), MK Mind (York House) and The Healthy Lifestyles Project (Hedgerows Children Centre) for knitting and making sessions.

Saturday 1 August: Gritting The Tunnel with I Knit London

Leake Street Tunnel, London (underneath Waterloo Station)

On the 1st of August an event slightly out of the ordinary will take place in the Leake Street tunnel: knitters and graff artists will create “a fusion of can and craft” as they will be gritting the tunnel. Bringing knitting and graffiti together is bound to lend an entirely unique look and feel to the dear tunnel. This is an event not to be missed, so bring out your best hardcore ninja knitting needles and join in the fun!

Fibrefest returns with a unique fibre, yarn and textile event showcasing a wide range of fibre related products, crafts and arts form the Blackdown Hills and across the UK. The 2009 event takes place in the grounds of Coldharbour Mill, working wool museum. Visitors will be able to view this unique water powered mill producing fine worsted yarns from local fleeces.

Gwlan Teifi, a cooperative of woollen mills in the Teifi Valley displays the modern alongside the traditional. Wall hangings, blankets and Welsh costume including Welsh flannel and shawls will sit aside contemporary clothing. All Mills use traditional Dobcross Power Looms, similar to those used 50+ years ago.

Artwork in the exhibition features a central textile instillation - a crocheted coral reef.  Artist Sue Diskin has led this piece of work, which has developed with a group of members over the past three months. The project has taken members from the basic stitches in to a fabulous creative world of colour and sculptural crochet art.

Stitches on the Bridge, Lùban air an Drochaid, in the West Highlands of Scotland, will be hanging pieces of knitting and crochet on the Skye Bridge. Stitches on the Bridge is calling for volunteers to help with compiling the pieces in the weeks leading up to the celebration and also with hanging the pieces on the bridge

24 - 25 October: Suffolk Herring Festival: 'Let's Knit Some Herring'

Middleton Farm Shop, Middleton, Suffolk, IP17 3NS

Since the idea’s inception folk have been knitting fish in Uist and the Fife coast to raise money for local charities such as the RNLI. The project connects the history of netting, knitting and fishing which is synonymous with fishing communities around the coast of Scotland. It is intended that the Fish Exchange travels along the coast encouraging knitters to make fish following the journeys of many fishermen and fish gutters of the past. We can bring this project to Suffolk in that historic journey made by so many Scottish men and women in the past.

Arc Community Gallery, Unit 33m, Vauxhall Industrial Estate, Greg Street, Stockport SK5 7BR

Artwork in the exhibition features a central textile instillation - a crocheted coral reef.  Artist Sue Diskin has led this piece of work, which has developed with a group of members over the past three months. The project has taken members from the basic stitches in to a fabulous creative world of colour and sculptural crochet art.

You will learn: how to cover button moulds, to attach and decorate buttons, make knitted and crocheted and Dorset buttons, use buttons as part of a decorative edging and how make a corsage or neckpiece using buttons and beads.
